Abstract:
Based on the experience of the 2014 Integrated Field Exercise (IFE14) in Jordan and the 2016 OSI Familiarisation Activity at the Nevada Test Site, the ability of the OSI team to conduct effective visual observation of the inspection area is very important to the successful outcome of an OSI. Indeed, some of the visual observables may disappear with time, or be altered by the Inspected State Party, or the UNE may not exhibit a collapse crater. The OSI team will need to take the visual observations into account, including the field conditions and the weather, and decide which OSI techniques to apply — not all OSI techniques will be needed in all cases. This point of view will be presented with examples from IFE14 and the visit to the Nevada Test Site.
