Abstract:
Lake Albert is located at western border of Uganda with Democratic Republic of Congo. The lake is bounded by boarder active faults of the western branch of the East African Rift System (EARS). The western branch of the EARS is very seismically active on the African Continent. On 2nd, 3rd and 4th July 2013, the Albertine Lake region was hit by moderate earthquake activity. The seismic events were recorded by the International Monitoring Stations (IMS) of the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). The data from IMS station network in the region was used to study the seismic events and advise the Government and the public in Uganda. Our National Data Centre (NDC180) efforts in analysis of the seismic activity demonstrates the readiness of CTBTO/IMS infrastructure towards entry into force of Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). The seismic activity on a known active zone is therefore useful in testing the IMS/CTBT verification capability.
