The 2nd CTBT Science Diplomacy Symposium will be held from 21 May to 1 June 2018 at the Vienna International Centre in Vienna, Austria. As with previous outreach and education activities, registrants can take part in the Symposium either online or in-person.

Objectives:

  • To raise public awareness of the CTBT’s contribution to international peace and security
  • To encourage cooperative and collaborative research and innovation on nuclear test monitoring science and technology
  • To stimulate creative thinking about possible political, legal and diplomatic solutions to the challenges facing the Treaty
  • To engage diplomats, practitioners and policy makers, academics, and the next generation of non-proliferation and disarmament experts on the CTBT and its verification regime

Financial Information

Financial support may be available to a limited number of participants who wish to attend in person. Such support must be requested at the time of registration and not later than the Funding Application Deadline of Monday, 19 March 2018. As financial support is limited, participants are strongly encouraged to first seek travel and participation funds from non-CTBTO sources.

All those who are requesting funding must fill out the statement of motivation.

Statement of Motivation:

For those who wish to participate in person, and are not affiliated with a government ministry or agency, please submit a brief statement of motivation below when indicating your participation type (400 words or less).

Those participating in person who are affiliated with a government ministry or agency and are not requesting funding, please simply indicate your affiliation in the "Statement of motivation" text box.

The Statement of Motivation, which will be part of the selection criteria for considering funding requests, may include the following:

  • Prior experience with CTBT related issues
  • Interest in the CTBT, arms control, nuclear non-proliferation, international relations, or verification science and technology
  • Expected outcome/benefit to be derived from participating in the Symposium, and how your participation would contribute to your career/academic objectives
  • Value that your participation would bring to the Symposium for the organization and other participants
  • How your participation would enable you to better promote the CTBT and advocate for its entry into force and universalization
